Capitula Terms of Use

Effective date: October 29, 2026

These terms cover the Capitula app and the website at capitula.io (together, "Capitula"). Capitula is made and operated by Shangting Huang, an individual developer in Hong Kong. "We" and "us" mean that person. Questions about these terms: [email protected]

Using Capitula

You may read, watch and download chapters for your own personal, non-commercial use. You need no account to browse the library or to play the free chapters; an account keeps your progress and notes, and is what a Capitula Premium subscription is attached to.

You may not copy, redistribute, resell, scrape or systematically download the animated explanations, narration, artwork, chapter files or other original material, or work around any technical restriction of the website or the app, including the limits on which chapters a free account can play.

02/ 09

Content and licence

The source texts are in the public domain. They come from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks. We do not reproduce any in-copyright edition.

The animated explanations, narration, illustrations and the Capitula name and logo are original to Capitula. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use them in the Capitula website and app. We keep all other rights.

The content is educational. It is not professional, legal, medical or financial advice.

Capitula Premium

In shortThe first chapter of every book is free. Every other chapter is part of Capitula Premium, an optional auto-renewable subscription: $49.99 a year or $7.99 a month (USD on the web), with a 7-day free trial.
  • One membership. A subscription bought on the web, in the App Store or on Google Play opens every chapter wherever you sign in with the same Capitula account.
  • Before you subscribe we show the price, the billing period and the free trial. Current prices are on the Pricing page.
  • Renewal. The subscription renews automatically for the same period until you cancel. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Premium stays open to the end of the period you have paid for.
  • Free trial. If you do not want to be charged, cancel before the trial ends. On the web an account gets one free trial; in the app, the store decides eligibility.
  • Price changes apply from your next renewal, and we or the store tell you in advance where the law requires it.

Buying on the web (Paddle)

Purchases on capitula.io are sold by Paddle (Paddle.com Market Ltd and Paddle.com Inc), our merchant of record and reseller. Paddle takes the payment, issues the receipt and invoice, calculates and remits sales tax or VAT, and handles refunds and chargebacks. A web purchase is a contract between you and Paddle under Paddle's buyer terms, which are linked from the checkout and every receipt; your licence to use Capitula is set out in these terms.

  • Manage or cancel in Paddle's customer portal: open You in the web reader and choose Manage subscription, or use the link in Paddle's receipt email.
  • Refunds follow our Refund Policy, including a 14-day money-back guarantee; Paddle pays them out.
  • We never receive your card number or billing details. We store the subscription status, plan, period and Paddle's subscription and customer identifiers against your account.
05/ 09

Buying in the app (App Store, Google Play)

  • Billing. Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google account when you confirm the purchase. Apple or Google processes the payment; we never receive your payment details.
  • Renewal. App subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends; the store charges the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
  • Manage or cancel in Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on iPhone, or in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
  • Refunds are handled by the store: reportaproblem.apple.com for Apple, or Google Play's refund process.

If you downloaded Capitula from the App Store, Apple's Standard End User License Agreement also applies: apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula. Where these terms and Apple's standard EULA differ, these terms apply to the extent Apple's rules allow.

Deleting is not cancelling

Deleting the Capitula app or your Capitula account does not cancel a subscription, wherever you bought it. Cancel it first.

06/ 09

Privacy

What we collect, where it is stored and how to delete it is in the Privacy Policy. Deleting your account removes your profile, progress, notes and share links.

07/ 09

Availability and changes

We may add, change or remove chapters and features. We may suspend or stop the service, but if we stop a paid subscription feature we will not charge you for a period you cannot use. We may update these terms; the effective date above changes when we do. Material changes are announced on the website, in the app or by email before they take effect.

08/ 09

Liability

Capitula is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data you did not back up. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under mandatory consumer law.
